  • deal with or describe in an idealized or unrealistic fashion; make (something) seem better or more appealing than it really is.
  • "the tendency to romanticize nonindustrial societies"

Anachronism (noun)
  • a thing belonging or appropriate to a period other than that in which it exists, especially a thing that is conspicuously old-fashioned.
    "everything was as it would have appeared in centuries past apart from one anachronism, a bright yellow construction crane"
  • an act of attributing a custom, event, or object to a period to which it does not belong.

Alien Society (noun)
  • ​Belonging to, characteristic of, or constituting another and very different place, society, or person; strange.
  • "an alien society could be robot armies, monsters, or humanoid aliens"

Social Commentary (noun)
  •  act of using rhetorical means to provide commentary on issues in a society.

Group Activity
Group Activity Handout
1.  Divide into groups of three and select a book from the instructor's stack.
2.  Identify who will take on the following three responsibilities
  • Librarian - conducts research using book
  • Technician - conducts research using Internet
  • Designer - creates presentation
3. Use Google Docs or Powerpoint to create a 7-slide presentation as follows.  Include meaningful images to support your content.
  • Slide 1:  Book cover image and summary of plot, setting, and characters
  • Slide 2: Team member names
  • Slide 3:  At least one example of romanticization in novel (identify and explain)
  • Slide 4: At least one example of anachronism in novel (identify and explain)
  • Slide 5: At least one example of alien societies in novel (identify and explain)
  • Slide 6: At least one example of social commentary in novel (identify and explain)
  • Slide 7: Classification of novel within at least 2 subgenres of science fiction (with definition of subgenre and reason for classification)
4. Make your presentation public with your personal account with Google Docs, Slideshare, or Author Stream. 
5. Send the link to your presentation through the form below.
